Building a Smarter Preset Workflow
Create your own preset variations. When you find a preset you love but it’s consistently too warm, too cool, too dark, or too contrasty for your specific camera and shooting style, don’t discard it — modify it and save it as a new preset. In Lightroom Classic, make your adjustments, right-click the original preset, and choose Update With Current Settings. In Lightroom Mobile, adjust the applied preset and save as a new custom preset. Building camera-specific and shooting-condition-specific variations from presets you love is how serious photographers develop a truly personalised editing workflow.
Apply presets in batches for efficiency. The real time-saving value of presets is in batch application — selecting a group of similar photos from the same shoot and applying a preset to all of them simultaneously, then doing quick individual fine-tuning where needed. In Lightroom Classic: apply preset to one photo in grid view, select all similar photos, and use Sync Settings to propagate the preset across the selection. This turns an hour of individual editing into ten minutes of batch application plus fine-tuning.
Organise presets by context, not by pack name. As your preset library grows, organisation becomes essential. Create preset folders named by aesthetic and context — Film Looks, Bright Airy, Moody Dark, Product, Outdoor, Wedding — rather than keeping presets in their original purchase folders. This approach makes finding the right preset for a specific photo immediate rather than requiring memory of which pack contained which style. Presets from different purchases that share aesthetic characteristics belong in the same folder.
Video LUTs: apply at the right point in your grade. For the cinematic LUTs in LOG and FLAT formats — and the moody wedding LUTs — the correct application order is: first apply any technical corrections (exposure, white balance, noise reduction), then apply the creative LUT as the colour grade. In DaVinci Resolve, use a node structure with corrections on one node and the LUT applied as a PowerGrade node. In Premiere Pro, apply LUTs via the Lumetri Colour panel’s Creative section. Applying LUTs before technical corrections produces inconsistent results because the LUT is calibrated for correctly exposed, white-balanced footage.
